Apprenticeships and traineeships

The Employer Apprenticeships and Traineeships Support Scheme is a financial incentive to support Northern Territory (NT) employers and industry who employ apprentices or trainees in the NT.

Eligible NT employers may be entitled to:

  • a $1,000 incentive upon registration of a training contract
  • an additional $1,000 for employers in regional / remote locations or employing an apprentice / trainee from an identified equity group
  • $500 grant for recommencement of an approved apprentice or trainee.

In addition, the following workwear and workgear bonues are available to registered apprentices and trainees in the NT:

  • $1,000 for eligible trade apprentices in an identified occupational shortage area
  • $300 to other eligible apprentices and trainees.

Aboriginal Employment Program

The Aboriginal Employment Program (AEP) provides support to employers, industry and not-for-profits providing jobs and training opportunities for Aboriginal Territorians.

The AEP includes:

  • Aboriginal Workforce Grants - an annual competitive public grant round for initiatives that see more Aboriginal Territorians in jobs or progressing in their careers. Initiatives could include partnership projects / collaborations to support one-off projects or programs.
  • Aboriginal Responsive Skilling Grants - responsive to the immediate needs of Aboriginal Territorians living in urban, regional and remote communities, Aboriginal Responsive Skilling Grants give access to training that leads to job outcomes. This can include vocational education and training (VET) that cannot be funded through any other source. The grants help employers or businesses by providing funding for wrap-around or other support needed to maximise employment potential.
  • Regional services - a team of dedicated workforce training coordinators are available in each of the regions to facilitate or connect clients with services including other regional initiatives and government programs.

Equity Training Program

The Equity Training Program grants can support the delivery of training and employment programs for employing disadvantaged groups in the Northern Territory. Guidelines apply.

Industry BuildSkills Program

The Industry BuildSkills Program grants can assist Territory employers to upskill or reskill existing workers in occupations and industry sectors affected by change. Industry specific nationally recognised training and / or assessment is utilised. Guidelines apply.

Territory Workforce Program

The Territory Workforce Program is the associated program for the Skilling Australian Fund, which is jointly funded through NT and Australian governments. It provides support for organisations to develop industry driven workforce initiatives to maximise job opportunities for Territorians and build a skilled workforce for business and industry, now and into the future.

The program has three streams:

  • Stream 1 focuses on increasing the commencement and completion of apprenticeships and traineeships, including pre-apprenticeships, higher apprenticeships and other employment related training relevant to the needs of Territory businesses and industry sectors.
  • Stream 2 focuses on workforce development (excluding apprenticeships and traineeships) to increase participation in the Territory economy through workforce development initiatives (including 'like' apprenticeships) that lead to employment and support targeted upskilling of Territorians.
  • Stream 3 focuses on industry workforce strategies supporting innovative industry-led projects that meet sector demands and improves the productivity of Territory businesses and industry sectors.
